What Is an ATS, Actually?

If you've worked in hiring or job hunting in the last decade, you've heard "ATS." People use it as shorthand for the software the company uses to hire, or as the villain in job-search stories ("the ATS rejected my resume").

An Applicant Tracking System is software that helps a company manage hiring from the moment a job is posted to the moment an offer is accepted. Most ATS platforms handle:

• Pushing roles to job boards, career pages, and LinkedIn
• Collecting resumes and candidate info in one place
• Scanning applications for keywords, skills, or titles
• Showing which stage each candidate is in (applied, screened, interviewing, offer)
• Templated emails and scheduling links
• Storing candidate data for legal and audit purposes

That was a real upgrade. Before these tools, recruiters tracked people in spreadsheets or shared inboxes, which fell apart once a company had more than a few open roles.

An ATS solves an organization problem: keep a growing pile of candidate information from turning into chaos. Useful. Also narrower than most people assume. Tracking applicants is not the same as running a good hiring process, and that gap is where a lot of companies get stuck.
